Lonely Artist is a 'silent' comic series, avoiding panels that use speech bubbles with text. The strips feature two main characters – a shy artist and a grumpy geek – anthropomorphised as an otter and honey badger. The stories are a humorous take on the frustrations of sharing studio space, the challenges faced by artists who are bad at self-promotion, and powerlessness to fix the world because you don't rule it. Both characters spend some time escaping reality in fantasy game worlds.

Lonely Artist started as an idea for Wellington Zinefest 2019. The first issue focused on the eponymous lonely artist character, the awkward and shy Otter, while Issue 2 centered on a cranky supporting character, Honey Badger. Issue 3 became the game edition, inspired by video game marathons during the Covid lockdown. Lonely Artist: The Collected Edition compiles Mary Guo and TBun's favourite Lonely Artist strips from issues 1, 2, and 3 into a single, 106-page volume, along with some refinements and new material.

CHROMA is proud to collaborate with Mary Guo and TBun to formally release the collection as a completed book printed in Risograph.

Artist

Mary Guo (artist and co-writer for Lonely Artist) has been working in the game and animation industry for over a decade, and is currently working in animation for children's television as a visual development artist. In her spare time, she works on various illustration and graphic novel projects. Be sure to check out her Wellington Coffee Shop artworks.
